The holes make it easy for the pups to grab and run quickly or catch in mid-air. I'm not sure how other small dogs would do but these are too small to play tug-of-war with my little girl and she is definitely not as interested in them as she is with her bigger one. I think we will donate these to animal control since I am sure they have some small dogs or cats that would appreciate these more than our picky girl lol. Still a great toy but just not the size she likes.
